It was obvious that Craze had won—they didn't even announce it, just held the mike into the audience as they screamed his name; and he jumped up and put his hands over his face, dedicating the award to his new baby daughter, born just three days earlier (awwwww). Actually, Craze had a lot of nieces, nephews and general family in the house, watching him become only the second person to win it all twice in a row.
Then the lights went up and security began sweeping the crowd toward the door like so much trash. The party just moved outside, as "MTV News" cameras interviewed the winners in front of crowds of yelling boys and a fleet of hip-hop promotional vans booming competing soundtracks. Kids scuttled around, chattering to each other in a host of foreign languages, trying to get DJs' autographs, shaking hands, even getting their picture taken with a real live DJ. Eventually, DJ Craze drifted toward Eighth Avenue in a crowd of cameramen and turntable geeks. The vans packed up and the Tick-Tock Diner filled up with baseball caps and baggy T-shirts. Somehow I couldn't shake the feeling that, in some way, I'd just gone to a chess match. <<< CitySearch Music >>>
